Algeal Bloom Training

July 17, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

From the Watershed Institute:

Learn from the experts at the NJDEP Bureau of Freshwater and Biological Monitoring at the first free workshop hosted by the NJ Watershed Watch Network.
Summer sampling season is upon us, and while we are out enjoying and monitoring our waterways, it is important to keep an eye out for harmful algal blooms (HABs). As HABs are becoming more frequent here in New Jersey, it is up to us, the NJ watershed monitoring community, to ensure that aquatic organisms and humans stay safe from the dangerous toxins that could be lurking in the water.
The workshop will begin with a brief introduction into what HABs are, how they occur, and how their toxins impact aquatic and human health. We will learn techniques for HAB identification, then we will head to a local lake to practice with the tools of the trade – a handheld Phycocyanin meter and a Cyanoscope. NJDEP will introduce their new HAB monitoring equipment lending program for which your group could be eligible to participate!
Workshop capacity is limited, so please register soon! For any questions about the workshop, contact Erin Stretz at estretz@thewatershed.org or 609-737-3735 ext. 17.
